Former UI VC Expresses Disappointment Over NELFUND Mismanagement in Nigerian Universities

Former UI VC, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, has expressed deep concern over the recent reports of mismanagement involving the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Speaking with The Guardian in Ibadan on May 4, 2025, Bamiro revealed that he was nearly moved to tears after learning that over 51 Nigerian tertiary institutions were accused of illegal deductions and exploitation related to the Fund.

Bamiro, who once led UI, described the mishandling of NELFUND by universities as deeply disappointing, especially given the government’s efforts to support students through the scheme.

He said that the exploitation of this Fund reflects broader issues in Nigeria’s leadership, which he believes extends beyond political leaders to academic institutions.

The former VC expressed concern about the quality of leadership in Nigerian universities, noting that such mismanagement is not only damaging to students but also to the reputation of the educational system as a whole.

He called for better leadership in universities and a reevaluation of the people entrusted with running these institutions.
