Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina state has rolled out several sweeping education reforms that focus on improving access to schools, modernising infrastructure, and strengthening teacher capacity.
These reforms, led by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education under Commissioner Hajiya Zainab Musa Musawa, have been implemented at both the primary and secondary levels.
Through a partnership with the AGILE Project, between 250 and 300 secondary schools across Katsina were renovated, while 170 new Junior Secondary Schools were built in underserved areas.
The schools were equipped with furniture, solar power systems, boreholes, and generators in selected locations. Sports fields for football and volleyball were also provided, alongside learning materials for students.
At the primary level, 150 schools were renovated through the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in collaboration with the Transforming Education at State Level (TESS) Project.
Many of these schools received new toilet facilities and boreholes, designed to improve sanitation and access to clean water.
The government has also embarked on constructing three Special Smart Schools, one in each senatorial zone. The schools are intended to provide advanced learning opportunities for gifted children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
