The House of Representatives has mandated an investigation into the National Examinations Council (NECO) over alleged irregularities in its budget implementation, internally generated revenue (IGR) use, and possible unauthorised virements between 2023 and 2025.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah during Thursday’s plenary session.
Ogah said NECO, as a revenue-generating agency, has a constitutional duty to remain transparent and accountable, particularly in remittances to the Federation Account. He raised concerns that the council may have implemented virements without legislative approval, describing it as a potential breach of the law and an affront to the House’s oversight powers.
The lawmaker urged the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies to examine NECO’s budget, IGR performance, bank statements, and evidence of remittances from 2023 to date.
The House directed the committee to complete its investigation and report back within three weeks for further legislative action.
