Kwara State is undergoing a significant transformation in its educational sector under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, with new developments at tertiary institutions aimed at enhancing the quality of education and creating job opportunities.
Speaking at the 2025 first quarterly inter-ministerial press briefing, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, highlighted the state’s progress in implementing innovative programs to improve academic standards.
The International Vocational, Technical and Entrepreneurship College (IVTEC) in Ajase-Ipo has made a notable contribution by sponsoring 200 youths in the Youths Empowerment and Employment Generation Scheme (KWYEEGS), demonstrating the state’s commitment to practical, job-oriented education.
The Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS) in Ilorin is the first Nigerian institution to receive accreditation for diploma programs in Mass Communication, Computer Science, and Islamic Common Law.
Additionally, all six National Diploma programs submitted to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) received full accreditation, with the college also achieving a perfect score in the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) re-accreditation.
To enhance access to education, CAILS has introduced a Sandwich Degree Programme in partnership with Kwara State University (KWASU) and embarked on constructing new hostels to improve student accommodation.
The college is also preparing to launch online classes and outreach centres, a new transformer, a block-making industry, and revitalise its College Bulletin.
Kwara State University of Education, a newly established institution, has already accredited 20 courses and been listed on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal, marking its entry into the competitive academic landscape.
Meanwhile, the International Aviation College in Ilorin recently celebrated the graduation of 19 pilots, including both military and civilian trainees, further boosting the state’s reputation in aviation training.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration has also made significant strides in completing long-awaited infrastructure projects, including a 1,000-capacity multipurpose auditorium at the Kwara State Polytechnic and the renovation of student hostels through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
New academic programs in Railway Engineering, Taxation, and Social Work have been introduced alongside several key accreditations for various courses.
The Polytechnic has also launched income-generating projects, including commercial farms and water production plants.
At the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, the 26th matriculation ceremony celebrated the college’s growing importance in public health education. At the same time, the College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode, has earned accreditation for its ND and HND Nursing programmes, with the first cohort of ND Nursing students officially matriculated.
