Some 2024–25 Nigerian Law School graduates have petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing two professional bodies of fraud in a mediation training programme.
In a petition dated September 17, co-signed by Goodluck Enebeli and Freedom Eje, the graduates called on EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to investigate the Mediation Training Institute (MTI) and the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC).
The petitioners alleged that MTI and ICMC, in partnership with the International Law Association, misrepresented a professional Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) course offered to about 905 students. Each student reportedly paid N130,000 for the programme and an additional N30,000 for physical induction.
The graduates claimed they were promised three certifications: Associate of ICMC, Accredited Mediator of MTI, and Membership of the International Law Association.
However, days before the scheduled induction on September 22, they were informed that only two certifications would be issued, while the physical induction would now be conducted virtually. “The conduct of the institutes amounts to obtaining money under false pretences, abuse of trust, and possible diversion of funds,” the petition read.
The graduates asked the EFCC to scrutinise the financial dealings of both institutes, determine the total funds collected, and prosecute anyone found culpable.
