The Nigerian Navy has begun renovating St. Stephen’s A Primary School in Modakeke, Osun State, one of the town’s oldest educational institutions.
The project, flagged off on Tuesday by Navy Capt. Saliu Aliero will see the near-century-old building refurbished after decades of neglect. Built in 1929, the school has long suffered cracked walls, leaking roofs and overcrowded classrooms, conditions that residents say made teaching and learning difficult.
Community leaders welcomed the intervention, describing it as a turning point for local education. The Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, said the project would restore dignity to the historic institution and inspire hope among children.
The headteacher, who is due to retire later this year, said she was grateful the school would receive a facelift during her tenure. Parents also expressed relief, recalling years when pupils had to learn in unsafe classrooms.
According to Navy officials, the renovation will include structural reinforcement, new furniture and improved sanitation facilities. The initiative is part of wider military community outreach programmes across the country.
Work is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with residents hopeful the school will soon regain its place as a hub of learning.
