An official of the National Board of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) has said the organisation is an examination body, not a religious outfit, and called for more awareness to ensure wider acceptance of its certificates.
Speaking in Osogbo, the Special Assistant to the registrar, Ustaz Abdul-Lateef Adekilekun, explained that NBAIS certificates are equivalent to those of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
He said that despite federal government recognition and international acceptance in cities such as London, Paris and Cairo, some tertiary institutions in southern Nigeria still reject NBAIS certificates due to poor awareness.
Adekilekun urged the NBAIS headquarters in Kaduna to convene a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting with vice-chancellors, rectors and provosts to address the issue.
Established in 1960 by the then Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, NBAIS now has 1,750 affiliated schools across 26 states.
Adekilekun commended the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Adamu, and the registrar, Prof Yahuza Imam, for their contributions to the Board’s growth, including prompt staff payments and the timely release of certificates.
