Nigeria has launched its first digital museum of antiquities to preserve and showcase the country’s cultural heritage.
The project, which was introduced by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in partnership with IHS Nigeria, makes over 200 historic artefacts from the National Museum in Lagos available online. Through 3D scans and immersive technology, people can now explore and experience these treasures from anywhere in the world. Each item is accompanied by educational material for easy learning.
NCMM Director General, Olugbile Holloway, said the project will make Nigeria’s heritage more accessible to younger and global audiences. Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, described the launch as a “transformative milestone” that secures national treasures while boosting Nigeria’s image abroad.
IHS Nigeria CEO, Mohamad Darwish, said the partnership shows how technology can boost education, protect culture, and support economic growth.
The digital museum is part of NCMM’s broader Digital Culture Initiative, which aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
