Nigerian Pidgin has become the most spoken language in Africa, with 121 million people using it in 2025. This is based on new data from Ethnologue shared by Visual Capitalist.
Even though only 5 million speak it as their first language, about 116 million speak it as a second language. This shows how fast Pidgin is growing across Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. Pidgin makes it easy for people from different tribes to understand each other and is used daily in markets, music, movies, and street conversations. Neighbouring countries like Ghana and Liberia also have a high number of pidgin speakers.
Hausa, another primary Nigerian language, follows with 94 million speakers worldwide. Globally, English is still number one with 1.5 billion speakers, followed by Chinese and Hindi. Experts say Pidgin is spreading because of Nigeria’s music (like Afrobeats), Nollywood movies, and more people moving into cities where many languages mix.
