A Nigerian student in the United States has shared an emotional account of the difficulties of studying abroad, highlighting racism, academic pressure and financial stress as significant challenges.
The student, identified on TikTok as @blexin_s, posted a video of herself in tears, describing how balancing schoolwork, part-time jobs, and social life had taken a toll on her. The clip has since gone viral, sparking a wave of reactions from social media users, many of whom expressed empathy and shared similar experiences.
“Being an international student in the USA is not for the weak,” she said in the video. “Facing racism, trying to balance academic work, social life and making money is not something I was prepared for coming here. Of course, there are fun parts, but there are dark times where you just want to go back home.”
She added that the thought of the sacrifices made to pursue her education abroad – including leaving friends, family and financial support behind – keeps her focused. Her story has reignited discussions on the hidden struggles faced by international students in Western countries.
