A Nigerian woman has stated that a bursary she received from the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was not conditional upon her being a member of the church.
Rosemary Wendy wrote on Facebook that she was awarded sponsorship to study at the Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management (RECTEM) after attending a service in Abuja with her aunt, despite not being a full member. She said the support enabled her to begin higher education when her family faced financial difficulty.
Her comments come amid online criticism of the RCCG’s General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, following a N10 billion fundraising appeal. Wendy defended Adeboye, describing the attacks as “silly”.
The case has renewed debate in Nigeria about the role of churches in education funding, philanthropy and public expectations of religious leaders.
