Sokoto Suspends Two School Principals

The Sokoto State government has suspended the principals of Government Secondary School, Lambar Tureta, and Junior Secondary School, Bissalam, after they were repeatedly found absent from duty.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala, stated that the decision followed a series of unscheduled inspections in which the officials failed to appear. Vice principals have been directed to assume an acting capacity to ensure continuity in school management.

The Commissioner, who conducted the visits alongside officials from the state’s Quality Assurance departments, stated that the move was part of efforts to restore accountability in the education sector.

“Negligence will not be tolerated,” Professor Ala warned, adding that school administrators must lead by example to improve discipline and learning outcomes.

The suspensions highlight broader concerns about absenteeism among school leaders and teachers in northern Nigeria, a problem critics say undermines teaching standards and leaves pupils struggling to learn.
