The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says there has been a significant decline in student performance in the just-released 2025 WASSCE, linking it to the new anti-malpractice measures. Out of over 1.9 million candidates, only 38.32% passed five subjects, including English and Mathematics. This is a significant fall from 72.12% recorded in 2024.
WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, said the decline followed strict new rules, like serialising objective questions, which made cheating harder. About 77% of results were fully released, while over 22% are still being processed due to technical issues. Also, 9.75% of results are being withheld over suspected malpractice—lower than last year’s 11.92%. Interestingly, girls performed slightly better than boys this year. Over 12,000 students with special needs also took part in the examination and had their results processed normally. WAEC said the new measures aim to improve the credibility of the examination system going forward.
