Parents of 88 Zamfara State-sponsored students at Cyprus International University have appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to settle more than ₦1bn in unpaid tuition, accommodation, residence permits, and feeding costs.
At a press conference in Gusau on Friday, Ambassador Ibrahim Tudu, chair of the Cyprus Students’ Parents Association, said the students had been left stranded and unable to continue their studies. He accused the governor’s media aide, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura, of misrepresenting the situation in recent radio broadcasts.
Tudu disputed Kaura’s claims that ₦290m had been paid and that only 72 students were affected, insisting the number was 88. He also rejected suggestions that the students had refused to return to Nigeria after being offered flights and allowances, saying they were acting on instructions from the governor to complete an assignment before returning. He urged the state to reach an agreement with the university so the students could finish their programmes and graduate.
