Nearly two weeks after Bayero University, Kano, hosted its 5th International Conference on Reading Research and Practice, education experts are urging the government to translate the event’s resolutions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) into concrete policy action.
The four-day conference, which ended on October 8, examined the role of AI in improving literacy and learning outcomes. It also raised ethical concerns over the growing use of AI tools among students.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Haruna Musa had described AI as both an opportunity and a challenge for Nigeria’s multilingual education system. At the same time, the Nigerian Communications Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, called for a national framework to guide AI use in schools.
Analysts say the discussions underscored a wider concern — that without strong regulation and teacher capacity development, AI adoption in classrooms could deepen educational inequalities rather than close them.
The Nigeria Centre for Reading Research and Development, organisers of the event, said it plans to release a post-conference communiqué to guide policymakers.
