First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has announced that the National Library Fund has so far raised ₦20.4 billion toward completing the long-abandoned National Library headquarters in Abuja.
Mrs Tinubu, who launched the fundraising initiative on September 18 as part of activities marking her 65th birthday, said the project reflects her lifelong passion for education.
She stressed that it is not a personal pet project but a national undertaking managed by the Federal Ministry of Education under the “Oluremi at 65 Education Fund.”
According to her, the Minister of Education and the Chief Librarian of the Federation are joint signatories to the fund account, ensuring transparency and accountability. “So far we have raised ₦20.4 billion since the launch last week, and more contributions are still coming in,” she told State House correspondents.
The First Lady thanked Nigerians for donating to the initiative instead of sending birthday gifts or congratulatory messages in the newspapers. She recalled how libraries shaped her formative years, nurturing her curiosity and love for learning.
“This is not just a project but a national treasure that will serve generations to come,” she said, while dismissing suggestions of political motives.
