A senior lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Dr Philips Nto, has resigned from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing the union of lacking transparency and running like a cult.
Nto, who heads the university’s Agribusiness Incubation Centre, claimed the union has been hijacked by self-centred individuals using it for personal vendettas instead of fighting for members’ welfare. In his resignation letter, he alleged that ASUU leaders tried to block his promotion to professor by petitioning against him. He also accused them of sidelining him in the sharing of recently released Earned Academic Allowances.
The former Abia State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning said the union’s actions have turned it into a tool for punishing perceived enemies. His letter was copied to the university’s ASUU leadership, led by Prof. Chike Ugwuene.
