Professor Idris M. Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has come under scrutiny following allegations of corruption and job racketeering published by Sahara Reporters.
The online outlet, in a report on August 14, accused the Board of financial irregularities and service-rule breaches, citing unnamed staff.
Nevertheless, Auwal Ahmed Ibrahim, a commentator on education issues, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and aimed at smearing Bugaje’s reputation. Writing in defence of the NBTE chief, Ibrahim said Bugaje had shown “integrity and transparency” throughout his public service career, pointing to reforms he has introduced in technical and vocational education.
He argued that the Sahara Reporters piece was “one-sided” and overlooked Bugaje’s record of curriculum development, partnerships with industry and efforts to raise technical education standards across Nigeria. The claims have not been independently verified, and Sahara Reporters has not responded to the rebuttal. Bugaje himself has not issued a public statement.
