The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has reiterated its commitment to tackling unaccredited institutions operating illegally as polytechnics.
Speaking during an accreditation visit to Harvard College of Science, Business and Management Studies in Abeokuta, Dr Fatimah Kabir Umar, NBTE Director of Polytechnic and Allied Programmes, warned that such schools threaten students’ futures and undermine the government’s vision for quality technical education.
“Polytechnic education is central to skills development and national growth. We cannot allow unaccredited institutions to continue exploiting unsuspecting students,” Umar said. She urged lecturers to pursue continuous professional development, highlighting the importance of academic and industry relevance to sustain Nigeria’s technical education sector.
The accreditation exercise assessed programmes in Science and Management disciplines, including Cybersecurity, Software Development, and Business Administration.
Dr Oluwatosin Adebayo, Provost of Harvard College, said the institution would continue to invest in infrastructure, staff training, and resources to meet NBTE standards.
The NBTE emphasised that its efforts to regulate the polytechnic sector aim to protect students, restore confidence in technical education, and ensure that graduates remain competitive both locally and internationally.
