Oyo Moves to Curb Hooliganism, Phone Use in Public Schools

The Oyo State Government has announced that it will commence strict enforcement of laws against student hooliganism, mobile phone use, and examination malpractice in public secondary schools across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Segun Olayiwola, disclosed this at an inter-ministerial briefing in Ibadan on Thursday, stating that the government is working with the police to maintain order in public schools. He warned that the state would no longer tolerate actions that could undermine the education system and urged parents to monitor their wards closely.

Olayiwola also stated that the Makinde administration had implemented reforms aimed at enhancing the education sector, including the recruitment of teachers, expansion of infrastructure, and a reduction in the number of out-of-school children. He said the improvements have helped attract support from development partners and alumni associations, and added that oversight of private schools has been stepped up. The commissioner attributed the changes to increased budgetary allocation, payment of subsidies to tertiary institutions, and restoration of counterpart funding lost under the previous administration.
