Following the directive of the federal government to halt the establishment of federal tertiary institutions, over 200 bills seeking approval from the House of Senate and Representatives will now be abandoned.
The ban decision was endorsed on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
According to Dr Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, Nigeria needs to pause the establishment of federal institutions if it wants to improve the quality of education. He added that Nigeria’s tertiary education system challenges are no longer limited to access but also include inefficient duplication and poor infrastructure.
