Over 1,000 poor students at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have been saved from dropping out, thanks to a scholarship programme by Dr Richard Nyong. His foundation, in partnership with Lekki Gardens Estate, is now covering tuition, housing, feeding, and transportation costs for the students. The support began in 2021 for 200 students, but has now grown to help five times more. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, said the help came at the right time, as many students would have quit school due to rising costs.
Dr Nyong also allocated ₦40 million to renovate hostels, laboratories, and classrooms. Students and teachers of the university have praised him, calling the programme a true example of nation-building. One student said the help goes beyond money—it gives them hope. With high inflation making school life harder, the scholarship is now a lifeline for many. Dr Nyong plans to support even more students in the years to come.
