Parents in Lagos State have expressed mixed reactions over the requirements for enrolling children into Junior Secondary School One (JSS1) in government schools for the 2025 academic session.
The controversy arose after some parents claimed they were asked to present a tax clearance certificate, reportedly at a fee of ₦10,100, during the admission process. Social media discussions quickly amplified the issue, with some interpreting it as requiring children to pay tax themselves.
A circular obtained clarified the official requirements for JSS1 admission. It specifies the documents parents or guardians must provide, including proof of residence, birth certificates, and evidence of payment of statutory fees.
Education authorities have urged parents to follow the official guidelines and verify information through legitimate channels to avoid misinformation. The Lagos State Government has not indicated that children are liable to pay any personal tax for admission.
